ArtStudio 48 is Great!
         By Shawn Balog

Montmartre and Centre 48 joined forces to make an art studio fit for a king.

Centre 48 received a grant of $7420.00 from Art Smart to redo a community art studio. A mid-winter decision was made to redo the school art room. They got a team together and hired a well-known artist from Regina named Lorn Beug who got his inspiration from Montmartre, Paris.

Hilderman Home Building Centre and Perras Construction donated much of the material and labour. Some of the volunteers were Bob Deringer, Patsy Fisher, Renée Marshall, Bonnie Barnes and more. One stood out - Bob Deringer. Everyday after school he was there. He says the reason he was here is because, “It was important for the community.”

The project started on April 7, 2005. Centre 48 supplied all the materials. Going by the 1800’s architecture from Montmartre, Paris they kept all their artifacts in drawers and cabinets. Most of the project was completed by May 2, 2005. There are free painting and drawing classes offered in the spring of 2005.

Centre 48 to create 'ArtStudio 48' (from the archives in 2005)

Centre 48 has secured a $7,400 ArtsSmart grant to create an art studio in the Montmartre School. The brand new studio will serve the entire Regina East Region and will be a centre for arts and cultural activities.
Most of the funding will be used to employ University of Regina artists who will work with Montmartre and surrounding communities to create a welcoming and art-friendly space.

“This project is really neat because the first part is just like Trading Spaces on TV. Local residents will work with a professional artist to completely redo the former art room in the Montmartre School,” said a Centre 48 spokesperson. “The local 'Renovation Team' will have five evenings and $900 to create a space that is a work of art itself and a space that will serve as a place where students can create their own works of art in the future.”

The ArtSmart project will consist of two phases: Part I will feature acclaimed Regina artist Lorne Beug who will work with the 'Renovation Team' to create 'Artstudio 48'. Part II will consist of a series of five introductory art classes which will be taught by U of R instructors and will be offered to all residents of the region.

“This project is a partnership between the U of R, Centre 48 and the Montmartre School which we think will prove to be a great way to share our resources, energy and collective enthusiasm for promoting the arts in rural Saskatchewan,” said Centre 48. “And what's more is that after the project is done, there will be the lasting legacy of an art studio left to serve our communities and left to inspire rural children, adults and seniors.”

Lorne Beug and the ArtStudio 48 Renovation Team will begin creating the studio space this April, with the series of introductory art classes expected to be offered in May and June.

A gala opening of 'ArtStudio 48' will be held this spring when the project is complete.
